While it’s easy to look at a messy desk and realize that it could use some tidying, remembering to clean some of the other common items in your office can actually be very difficult. They’re not always in plain sight, and they can be easy to ignore, as they may not always look dirty. Rest assured, however, these items can become covered in germs over time, and if you don’t remember to disinfect them regularly, by the time they do become dirty, it’ll already be too late. But if you want to keep your office looking its best, it’s important to clean all of its surfaces – including the ones that you always forget about. Today, we’ll discuss five of those surfaces, and we’ll give you tips on how to clean them effectively. Let’s get started!

First of all, for an effective DIY office cleaning, you will need:

  • – A soft cloth
  • – A brush
  • – Water
  • – Mild soap
  • – Disinfecting Wipes
  • – Cleaning solution (optional)
  • – A vacuum cleaner

The first item on our list is the phone. Yes, because we use our phones every day, it should come as no surprise that these devices are often covered in germs! While they have a habit of always looking clean, our phones are actually one of the most unsanitary things that we will touch on a regular basis. Be sure to wipe them down whenever you break out your disinfectant wipes! To clean your phone, start by dusting it with a soft cloth. Then, use a disinfectant wipe to clean the screen and the buttons. If your phone has a case, be sure to clean that as well by wiping it down with a new cloth or disinfectant wipe, making sure to remove it and get anything that may have slipped in underneath.

Next up is the computer keyboard. Keyboards are another thing that we use every day – which means they can end up getting pretty grimy. We do a lot of things with these devices, from typing to eating, to simply resting our hands. To clean your keyboard, start by unplugging it from your computer. Then, use a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment to remove any dust or dirt. Finally, use a damp cloth to wipe down the keys themselves. Be sure not to use too much water, or you could damage your keyboard! Finally, if you happen to have a cotton swab, use it to clean the area between your keys. Dust and dirt can accumulate there over time, especially on mechanical keyboards, and taking care of it regularly will help prevent any buildup that may require more effort to remove later.

The third item on our list is the mouse. Computer mice are another office essential that can get pretty dirty (So are regular mice, but that;s beside the point). To clean your mouse, start by unplugging it from your computer as well – This is the case for almost anything you clean that is connected to your computer. Then, wipe down the surface of the mouse with a disinfectant wipe. Finally, use a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol to wipe down the crevices of the mouse. If your mouse has any buttons, be sure to clean those as well!

The fourth item on our list is the desk. Desks are one of the most important surfaces in an office— but they’re also one of the easiest to forget about cleaning. To clean your desk, start by dusting it with a soft cloth. Then, use a damp cloth to wipe down the surface. If your desk is made from wood, be sure to polish it with a wood cleaner once a month to protect it from scratches and keep it looking its best.

The fifth and final item on our list is the office chair. Office chairs can get pretty dirty if they’re not cleaned regularly. To clean your office chair, start by dusting it with a soft cloth. Then, use a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment to remove any dirt or hair that’s accumulated on it. Finally, use a damp cloth to wipe down the fabric seat and backrest. Be careful not to soak the fabric! If you have a chair that’s made with leather, you can skip the vacuum and go straight to a full wipedown. Make sure that you are using approved cleaning solutions on your chair to avoid damaging or warping the leather.
